Nearly every sports fan, from Bangor to Bakersfield, has been talking about Wednesday night's Angels-White Sox game, or more specifically, the finish to that game. I'll just say this quick, and then mention a few links: It doesn't matter whether or not the ball hit the dirt. All that matters is Doug Eddings' reaction and very, VERY adamant out call, and his lack of verbal confirmation to cement that call. Watching Eddings backtrack in last night's presser was pathetic almost to the point of sad, until I realized that so much of this debacle has to do with umpires and their ego, which they spin as merely the way they must conduct themselves to be fair.
In this Yahoo report, Eddings makes for the first time a reasonable comment on last night's circus, though he does so in such a way that makes it seem as though he's being humble and apologetic, when in reality, I'm betting someone from MLB got to him and pointed out how much of an idiot he was Wednesday night.
Dan Wetzel pretty accurately explains how just about everyone not wearing pinstripes or an umpire shirt feels about the call, while Ryne Sandberg takes the tack a lot of apologists have, blaming the play on Angels catcher Josh Paul. Look, Paul SHOULD have tagged Pierzynski, but didn't because he was so certain that the pitch reached his glove cleanly. So yeah, maybe he should have tagged pierzynski just to be sure, but to blame him for what happened would be like blaming the operators of the Titanic for selling boarding passes.
