Light and Heavy

OK, gonna start off with something easy.
Kirk Bohls of the Austin American Statesman published his first AP Top 25 List of the college football season, and in addition to revealing that the AP is going to put out its first poll a day earlier than expected, it's also a great show of reader perception. I like Bohls, but I think he's a leeeeeetle too much of a Longhorns homer to have the enviable position he has. However, the Bevo-lovin' readers who have commented on his first poll by and large hate the guy because he's so negative. The guy who wrote, "Ohio State and Texas are already ranked first and second in the coaches poll. Only once before have two top-five teams met in Austin — in 1970 when No. 1 Texas waxed No. 4 Arkansas 42-7" is too harsh on Texas for these folks. Interesting life, that of a sportswriter.


Now, onto more serious matters,
Jill Carroll is telling her story on the Christian Science Monitor's Web site. Maybe the most important story of the year, and if she can make it as compelling throughout as it's been so far, I think words like "Pulitzer" aren't out of the realm of possibility. Not, of course, that she's writing it for that. There's a new chapter every day (she's up to five as I write this), and I strongly suggest you read each and every one.

Snootch to the Nootch

Got a good one for ya. Kevin Smith has a blog, which isn't all that surprising. But the thing I really wanted to link is Smith's nine-part account of his life with Jason Mewes. What you know is that Mewes and Smith are also known as "Jay and Silent Bob." What you might know is that Mewes had a pretty serious drug problem in the 90s (and into the aughts). What you don't know (or at least I didn't) is just how Smith fought and fought and fought to keep Mewes alive and around. I'm only two chapters in as I write this, because they're pretty long, but it's a tremendous story, and Smith is a hell of a writer (obviously). Give it a look when you have a little time.
